We are frequently asked about the best things to do in Panama. While there are a number of great places to spend time in Panama City, the Casco Viejo district is our favorite.
Casco Viejo
When we first started in Panama, Casco Viejo was an underrated area of the city, little did Panama know it was a hidden gem. Over the past 5 years there's been a surge of development and UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage site. Between the stunning architecture and amazing restaurants, it's one of my favorite places in the entire world. Wander, take photos, have a drink and soak it all in.
Stay here:
The Tantalo Hotel - The Tantalo is a great boutique-sized hotel with generously sized rooms. It has a rooftop bar that's busy on weekends and a fantastic restaurant. There seems to be an event there every night so it's a great place for those who like night life.
American Trade Hotel - The American Trade Hotel is gorgeous, more upscale but also more traditional than the Tantalo. It's a great choice if you'd like a calmer, more peaceful stay.
Eat here:
Manolo Caracol - We eat here every time we visit Panama. While it's now frequented by hordes of tourists after getting a number of glowing reviews, it's still a great meal based on fresh locally sourced ingredients in the heart of the old city.
The Tantalo Hotel - Even if you don't stay here it's a great place to get a Tapas style meal at long communal tables.
Mostaza - Small local restaurant that's been there before all the recent development. Great for a light informal lunch.
Work here:
Casco Station - Casco Station is the best co-working space in Panama City. Harold has done a great job creating a modern open space that facilitates lots of impromptu conversations. It's an inspiring place to spend the morning working away.
